Each season, coaches ask for ways to enhance accountability within their teams, especially when working with Gen Z athletes. In today’s evolving sports landscape, understanding how Gen Z communicates and collaborates is essential for fostering a culture of responsibility and ownership.
Gen Z athletes thrive when they are part of a co-created process. Facilitating conversations around your team’s core values can significantly increase athlete accountability.
Below is a step-by-step guide for a team accountability exercise using the example of “leadership” – you can substitute any topic you feel is important to discuss!
Step 1: Identify Key Leadership Qualities
Start by asking your team:
“Think of a leader that you respect or admire. What qualities does that person have or exhibit?”
As the athletes shout out their responses, write these qualities on a whiteboard. This will open up a dialogue and encourage them to think critically about the values they hold important, fostering deeper communication between teammates.
Step 2: Prioritize Team Qualities
Break the team into small groups of 3-8 players. “Using the qualities on the board as options, identify the 5* most important qualities for our team to embody this season.”
💡 Pro Tip: Tailor the number of qualities based on team size for effective communication and engagement.
Step 3: Share and Discuss
Invite a representative from each group to share the top qualities their group identified. As each quality is mentioned, add tally marks next to that quality on the board. This process encourages open communication between team members and reinforces shared values.
Step 4: Finalize Top Team Qualities
After hearing from all groups, count the tally marks to identify the top 5 qualities the team will commit to. Write these qualities in a seperate spot on the board. This step reinforces a shared understanding and prioritizes the values that resonate most with Gen Z athletes.
Step 5: Personal Accountability – Self-Selection
Encourage team members to choose one of the top 5 qualities they personally want to uphold this season. Ask them to group themselves based on their selected quality, promoting self-responsibility and peer accountability. This approach taps into Gen Z’s desire for ownership and direct communication in their commitment to the team.
Step 6: The A.I.R. Framework for Team Accountability
Now, introduce the A.I.R. framework, an acronym that helps athletes communicate their commitment and reflect on their actions:
“In successful teams culture isn’t something we talk about occasionally or work on every once in a while. Culture is the environment we create daily through everything that we do. It’s invisible yet ever-present, much like the A.I.R. we breathe.”
A = Action: What actions can you take daily to demonstrate this quality?
I = Intention: What intention can you set to ensure this quality is consistently present?
R = Reflection: How well did you demonstrate this quality today? What do you want to shift of change to prioritize this quality tomorrow?
By incorporating A.I.R., you create an environment where your athletes are more responsible for their actions, mindful of their intentions, and open to reflecting on their performance.
Make Accountability Visible
Make your team’s top qualities and A.I.R. commitments visible in the locker room or practice area. Regularly revisit these to keep communication open and ensure the team is continuously aligned with the values they’ve chosen to embody.
